Chapter five

My eyes finally opened with a blur, all I could see around me were bizarre machines.  "Where am I?" I thought but my mind was too clouded to answer me, the room smelt like disaffected which made me grimace.  I looked around the cramped room. The room was mostly dominated by my bed; next to my bed was a small oak bedside table that was scattered with different types of magazines and a single box of tissues. In front of the table was a comfortable chair and alongside the wall were three dining type chairs that also sat in front of three large windows.  That gave me a view of the park across the street and three quarters of the parking lot. The room was decorated in colors designed to be restful but come off as similar to the decorator’s choice for a funeral home. The room also was desperately trying to look like someone's bedroom but was lacking the personality. The floor was a plain checkered pattern that you would see in old barber shops. I managed to push the blankets off of me and slowly peered in to the private bath that can't conceal its functionality. There was a handicap railing on the toilet, shower and tub.  The entry to both hospital room and private bath was a large heavy door engineered to open quietly and won't slam closed. I've always hated those kinds of doors; they always scared me when they slammed behind you. I let out a sigh and then rubbed my forehead trying to recollect what exactly happened the previous night. I sat back down on my bed; the bed was somewhat lumpy with padding and sheets that are trying to mask the thick plastic covering the mattress. I noticed the sheets were in sterile with a white and a pale blue blanket.  There was a phone attached to the bed by a cord, the call button was also attached to the bed.  I looked up at the white ceiling and also noted that there was only a single light lighting the entrance area and was also lighting my bed side area. The room was never really entirely dark but gave me the feeling it was just dark in the first place. I was aware of the little table that was attached to the underside of the bed that I could move around the bed, to keep everything handy. Depending on how long the patient has been in checked into the hospital. I looked over and saw my notebook and phone was also scattered on the nightstand. I reached over and picked up my phone, I turned it on and noticed it has been three days. “W-W-What?’ I shuddered and then dropped my phone on my lap as my hands shook.  “I-I-I’s been three days? But how? I don’t even remember passing out!?” I shouted in my head and then looked at my note books and flipped through the pages. “The last sketch I made was on Friday so that must mean I have been out cold since Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.” I thought again, I sucked in the stale air and looked down noting my hands were shaking harder than before. “Okay, just stay calm, maybe there is a doctor around to explain what exactly happened and why I’m here.” I said taking a deep breath and then scanned the room once more. The IV pole next to my bed had a digital monitoring system that tended to beep every time I moved.  The IV gets clogged constantly and beeps incessantly when a new bag is needed. "Was I still at the hospital? Or am I somewhere else?" I thought again but again my mind was too blurred to answer me. “Ah I see you’re awake.” Raven said coming into the room and then shut the door behind her gently. “W-Where am I?” I asked not realizing my voice was shaky. “Don’t worry your safe now.” Raven smiled walking further into the room and then sat at the edge of the bed. “What do you mean safe?” I asked again recovering from my shaky breath.  “You’re at the academy.” Raven said again positioning her hand on the bed, “Academy?” I repeated but was slightly confused, “Yes, were all new bitten werewolves come to learn about their new life.” Raven explained with a grin and then lifted her hand in the air. “Werewolf!” I shouted, “You have to have some sort of mistake, I’m not a werewolf. I’m a human! I ordinary stupid human.” I said quickly. Raven shook her head disagreeing with me, “No.” She said slowly and then placed a hand on my leg. “You are a werewolf, you turned three days ago.” Raven explained carefully.  “T-Three days ago…So that must be why I was asleep for so long?” I questioned and then shook my head. “No! I’m a human! I refuse to believe you!” I cried trying to fight the tears. “Simon, you have to understand. Your old life is history, you are now a werewolf. You belong here now.” Raven said raising her voice slightly and then cleared her voice and then spoke again. “Your parents wanted you to attend here.” She said softly as my lip quivered. “S-so my parents were w-werewolves too?” I asked clenching the sheets tightly. She simply nodded, and watched me for a few seconds. My breathing was heavy and raspy, fear was in my eyes. “You need to calm down; you won’t be starting classes just yet. You still need to recover from your first turn.” Raven said as I gulped. “W-Will you be my tutor then?” I asked trying to stay calm. “No, But I will be your councilor. I have assigned a professor to show you around the academy and help you ease into your new life.” Raven explained getting up from the bed and then walked to the door. “The professor will be here shortly to pick you up, I’d advise you to rest till then.’ Raven said simply and then walked out of the room. I took a few shaky breathes and then looked down at my hand that were also shaking. “I-I-I’m a werewolf now.” I told myself and then breathed in the stale air. “I’m a werewolf now.” I told myself more confident, and then placed my hands in my lap. I laid back down and then just stared up at the ceiling unable to sleep with this new information.
